Each of these independent operations has a distinct vision for the spirits they’re brewing. Some are one- or two-person backyard operations; others work from state-of-the-art laboratories with an eye for creating a distinctive product and an emphasis on quality. Regardless of their size, these distilleries all embody the essence of Detroit, with their uncompromising work ethic and passion for making great drinks.
Founded by eight friends who grew up as self-described “farm boys” in Bath, Michigan, Detroit City Distillery pours its artisanal whiskey, gin and vodka in the heart of Eastern Market. The spirited revolutionaries behind the operation strive for quality in their product but also in their customer service. “When you walk in our door, you’re not just a customer — you’re family,” explains co-founder David Landrum. This approach extends beyond the tasting room with the team at Two James distilling for the greater good of the community, from donating its craft spirits to first responders during the coronavirus pandemic to producing hand sanitizer based on a 19th century French recipe.
This ecumenical spirit company, which is named for the founder’s late parents, produces everything from a young bourbon to a rye that can be traced back to Ann Arbor’s Wing Farms. Other highlights include the Old Cockney gin, which is earthy and root-based, and the Mayor Pingree bourbons, named after Hazen S. Pingree, who served as mayor of Detroit from 1890 to 1897.
